December 17
Canadian Maple Syrup Day happens on Tuesday December 17, 2024.
It’s that time of year again; the snow is falling and it’s the perfect excuse to indulge in some of Canada’s finest – maple syrup! Every year, Canadians come together on December 17th to celebrate National Canadian Maple Syrup Day. In honour of this delicious holiday, let’s take a look at how maple syrup is made and how you can get in on the festivities.
Maple syrup starts with maple trees. The sap from those trees is collected by people called “Sugarmakers.” This sap is similar to water, but it has a small amount of sugar in it. The sugarmakers then boil the sap down until it becomes thick and syrupy. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup!
Once the syrup has been boiled down, it is filtered and graded based on colour and flavour. Grades are determined by the time of season – lighter syrups are usually made earlier in the spring while darker syrups are made later on in the season.
The best way to celebrate Canadian Maple Syrup Day is by having a pancake party! Grab your friends, family, or neighbours and whip up some pancakes (or waffles). Drizzle them with real maple syrup (not imitation!) for a sweet taste of Canada that everyone will love. If you want an extra special treat, try making some other recipes using maple syrup like candied bacon or French toast casserole. Don’t forget to serve up some classic breakfast sides like scrambled eggs, fresh fruit salad and crispy bacon strips!
