August 29
More Herbs, Less Salt Day happens on Thursday August 29, 2024.
It’s National More Herbs, Less Salt day! In honor of this special day, let’s take a look at how we can use more herbs and less salt in our lives. Too much sodium can have some pretty nasty effects on our diets, so it’s important to be mindful of how much salt we’re consuming. Using more herbs is a great way to add flavor to our food without loading up on the sodium. Plus, herbs are packed with antioxidants and other nutrients that are good for our health. So let’s celebrate National More Herbs, Less Salt day by learning how to use more herbs in our cooking!
The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day for healthy adults. That may sound like a lot, but it’s actually not that difficult to reach that limit. Just one teaspoon of salt contains 2,325 milligrams of sodium! And let’s be honest, who only uses one teaspoon of salt when they’re cooking? It’s easy to see how we can easily exceed the recommended amount of sodium per day.
Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. It can also cause water retention, which can lead to bloating and weight gain. So it’s important to be mindful of the amount of salt we’re consuming. Reducing the amount of salt in our diets is one way to help keep our hearts healthy and our waistlines trim.
One way to reduce the amount of salt in our diets is to substitute herbs for salt when we’re cooking. Herbs like basil, thyme, rosemary, and oregano can add a lot of flavor to our food without all the extra sodium. When substituting herbs for salt, a general rule of thumb is to use one-third as much herb as you would salt. So if a recipe calls for one tablespoon of salt, you would use one teaspoon of herb instead. Adjust the amount as needed to suit your taste buds.
