National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day: A Celebration of the Sweetest Kind

Today is National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, and we could not be more excited! This beloved cookie has a long and delicious history, and there are so many different ways to enjoy them. In honor of this momentous occasion, we thought we would share a little bit about the chocolate chip cookie, as well as some of our favorite recipes. Keep reading for all the chocolatey details!

The History of Chocolate Chip Cookies

The chocolate chip cookie was invented by accident in 1930 by Ruth Graves Wakefield. She owned the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, and she was known for her creative desserts. One day, she was trying to make a batch of chocolate cookies but she ran out of baker’s chocolate. So, she improvised and used a Nestle semi-sweet chocolate bar instead. She expected that the chocolate would melt and spread throughout the dough like it normally does, but much to her surprise, the chocolate pieces held their shape. And thus, the chocolate chip cookie was born!

Wakefield’s recipe quickly became popular, and she eventually sold the rights to Nestle in return for a lifetime supply of chocolate. The company then included her recipe on its packaging, which helped propel the cookies to national prominence. Today, there are dozens of different variations on Wakefield’s original recipe, but they all share one key ingredient: chocolate chips!

Types of Chocolate Chip Cookies

Now that you know a little bit about the history of this iconic cookie, let’s talk about some of the different types that you can find today. Here are just a few of our favorites:

  • Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies: These are your standard cookies made with butter, sugar, flour, eggs, baking powder or soda, salt…and of course, plenty of chocolate chips!
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies: For those who like a little bit of salty with their sweet, these cookies are for you. They’re made with all of the same ingredients as classic chocolate chip cookies but also include peanut butter for an extra dose of flavor.
  • Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies: Looking for something a little bit heartier? Oatmeal cookies are perfect for satisfying those afternoon cravings. Just be sure to add plenty of chocolate chips!
  • Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies: These cookies are perfect for those with dietary restrictions or allergies. They’re made with vegan margarine or oil, sugar, flour, baking powder or soda…and again, lots and lots of chocolate chips!
  • And many more! There are endless possibilities when it comes to flavors and ingredients in your favorite cookie. So get out there and start baking (or eating)!

No matter how you like your cookies—soft or crunchy; chewy or cakey; plain or full of mix-ins—there’s sure to be a recipe out there that’s perfect for you.
