National Condiment Month happens on Sunday September 1, 2024.
That’s right, folks, it’s National Condiment Month! And what better way to celebrate than by learning some fun facts about everyone’s favorite flavor enhancers? Read on to find out everything you ever wanted to know about condiments.
Technically speaking, a condiment is any food that is used to enhance the flavor of another food. This can include things like sauces, herbs, and spices. In common usage, however, the term “condiment” is most often used to refer to sauces, particularly those that are used as spreads or dips. Common examples of condiments include ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, ranch dressing, and BBQ sauce.
Condiments have been around for thousands of years. One of the earliest recorded examples is a fish sauce known as garum that was popular in Ancient Rome. Fermentation was used to make the sauce, and it was so beloved by the Romans that it even became somewhat of a status symbol – with the most expensive varieties being reserved for the wealthiest citizens.
In more recent history, condiments really came into their own during the Industrial Revolution. Canning and other food preservation techniques made it possible to mass-produce condiments and sell them at a reasonable price, which led to their widespread popularity. In 1876, Heinz debuted his now-famous ketchup at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, and the rest is history!
Condiments can be used in all sorts of ways beyond just enhancing the flavor of your food. For example, did you know that you can use ketchup as a cleaning agent? Just apply it to rust spots on metal surfaces and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it away. Or how about using mayonnaise to condition dry hair? Simply apply it to damp hair and let it sit for 20 minutes before shampooing as normal.
So there you have it—everything you need to know about National Condiment Month! Be sure to celebrate by trying out some new recipes or experimenting with different uses for your favorite condiments. After all, there’s no better way to show your love for ketchup/mustard/mayo than by getting creative with its many uses! Until next time…happy cooking!
