What is Drive-Thru Day?

Drive-Thru Day is a holiday that celebrates one of the most convenient inventions of all time: the drive-thru. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite to eat or picking up your morning coffee, there’s no denying that drive-thrus make our lives a whole lot easier. And what’s not to love about that?

This holiday was created in 2015 by Innovation & Tech Today, a website dedicated to celebrating all things innovation and technology. And we have to say, they chose a pretty great invention to honor!

How Many Kinds of Drive-Thrus Are There?

There are three main types of drive-thrus: fast food, coffee, and banking. Of course, there are many subcategories within each of these categories (for example, fast food drive-thrus can be further divided into burger joints, chicken restaurants, etc.), but those are the three main types.

Where did Drive-Thrus originate?

While not the first drive-thru restaurant, Jack in the Box was the first chain to feature a two way intercom system with a focus on drive-thru ordering. This restaurant opened its doors in San Diego, California in 1951. However, it wasn’t until the 1970s that drive-thrus really started to become popular. In fact, it was during this decade that many of the major fast food chains we know and love today (such as McDonald’s and Wendy’s) added drive-thrus to their restaurants.

Why are Drive Thrus so popular?

Drive thrus are popular for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, they’re convenient. When you’re short on time but still need to grab something to eat or drink, a drive thru is the perfect solution. Additionally, they’re often less expensive than sit-down restaurants since you don’t have to pay for things like table service or tipping. And last but not least, they’re just plain fun! There’s something about pulling up to a window and ordering your food that just feels good.
