August 4
National Farmers Market Week happens on Sunday August 4, 2024.
It’s officially National Farmers Market Week! What does that mean for you, dear reader? It means that this is the week to stuff your face with all of the locally grown produce and handmade goods your heart desires.
So where do you find these fabled farmers markets? Well, if you’re in the United States, there’s a good chance there’s one near you. In fact, according to the USDA website, there are 8,268 farmers markets operating nationwide as of 2019. Impressive, right?
But what can you actually find at these farmers markets? Let’s take a look.
You can obviously find produce at the grocery store, but the produce at farmers markets is on another level. First of all, it’s fresher because it hasn’t had to travel as far to get to you. That means it not only tastes better, but it also retains more nutrients. Secondly, many farmers grow heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables that you simply can’t find at the supermarket. If you’re looking to mix up your produce game, a trip to the farmers market is in order.
In addition to produce, most farmers markets also have vendors selling baked goods like breads, pies, cookies, and more. These are usually made with local ingredients and often don’t contain any artificial flavors or preservatives. You can also often find gluten-free and vegan options if that’s your thing.
Looking for a unique gift for a friend or family member? Chances are you’ll find it at a farmers market! Artisans sell everything from pottery and jewelry to soaps and candles. You can also usually find woodworkers, metalworkers, and other craftspeople selling their wares. Not to mention the fact that supporting local artists is always a good idea.
So there you have it! Those are just a few of the reasons why National Farmers Market Week is the best week of the year. Make sure to head out to your local market and stock up on all of the deliciousness before the week is over!
