February 7
National Fettuccine Alfredo Day happens on Wednesday February 7, 2024.
It’s time to celebrate National Fettuccine Alfredo Day on February 7th, and we’ve got just the recipe! But before we get into the nitty-gritty of how to make the perfect fettuccine Alfredo, let’s take a look at its origins.
The story of fettuccine Alfredo goes all the way back to 1914, when a restaurateur in Rome, Italy created it for his wife who had recently gave birth, but had lost her appetite. He combined butter and Parmesan cheese with noodles to create a dish that was both comforting and easy to eat. The original name for this dish was “fettuccini al burro” (fettuccine with butter).
Years later, in 1927, an American film producer named Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and his wife Mary Pickford visited this same restaurant – called “Alfredo” after its creator – and fell in love with the dish. They asked for seconds, thirds, even fourths! When they returned home to Hollywood, they asked their chef to recreate it and renamed it “Fettucini Alfredo” in honor of its creator.
This version of fettucini alfredo spread like wildfire throughout Hollywood – everyone wanted a piece of it! The signature dish gained popularity across North America and eventually made its way back to Europe where it continues to be one of Italy’s most popular dishes today.
So, now that you know what inspired National Fettucini Alfredo day (and have an appreciation for the cultural history behind the meal), why not whip up your own version? Whether you choose to go traditional with butter or experiment by adding some garlic or cream sauce is completely up to you; either way you can’t go wrong! Enjoy celebrating National Fettucini Alfredo day on February 7th! Bon Appetit!
