August 8
National Frozen Custard Day happens on Thursday August 8, 2024.
Today is National Frozen Custard Day, and we are celebrating in a BIG way! This delicious treat has a long and storied history—one that dates all the way back to 1919. Frozen custard is a rich, smooth, and creamy dessert that is made with eggs, cream, sugar, and vanilla extract. It is similar to ice cream, but it contains less air and more egg yolks, which gives it a dense and velvety texture.
Frozen custard first gained popularity in the Midwest United States during the 1920s. The first known frozen custard stand was established by Archie and Elton Kohr in Coney Island, New York. The Kohr brothers later helped disperse this tasty treat to other parts of the country, including Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Arkansas, and Missouri.
Today, there are hundreds of frozen custard stands across the United States. And while vanilla remains the most popular flavor of frozen custard, there are now endless flavor possibilities. Some of our personal favorites include chocolate chip cookie dough, raspberry truffle cheesecake, birthday cake batter…the list goes on and on!
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even make your own frozen custard at home! All you need is an ice cream maker and some basic ingredients. There are tons of recipes available online—just do a quick search for “homemade frozen custard recipe” and you’ll be sure to find one that sounds delicious to you.
No matter how you choose to celebrate National Frozen Custard Day, we hope you have a delicious time doing it! Be sure to tag us in any photos of your frozen custard adventures—we love seeing them! Happy National Frozen Custard Day!
