Celebrate National Moldy Cheese Day with a Taste of Blue, Brie, and Camembert!

Move over pizza and macaroni and cheese. October 9th marks National Moldy Cheese Day, the perfect time to celebrate the delicious world of blue, Brie, and Camembert cheeses. These varieties are unique in their own right but all have one thing in common—they’re made with mold. And that’s something to celebrate! Let’s explore what makes these tasty treats so special.

Blue Cheeses: What is It?

Blue cheese is a type of cheese that has been inoculated with cultures of Penicillium roquefortii or Penicillium glaucum. This gives it a unique flavor profile—it’s both creamy and tangy at the same time—and its distinctive blue-green veins throughout the cheese. Popular varieties include Roquefort, Gorgonzola, and Stilton.

Blue cheeses are typically aged for several months before they reach peak ripeness. During this process, enzymes break down proteins in the milk which give them their characteristic flavor profile. The blue veining comes from spores that are injected into the cheese during the aging process which help form a rind on the outside of the cheese as well as add flavor complexity to its interior.

Brie Cheese: What is It?

Brie is a soft cheese made from cow’s milk or goat’s milk (or sometimes both). Its texture can range from creamy to almost spreadable and it has an edible white rind which gives it its distinctive taste. Brie can be served as part of an appetizer plate or used in recipes such as grilled cheese sandwiches or baked bries topped with nuts and honey. Its mild yet slightly tangy flavor pairs nicely with fruit or crackers making it an ideal choice for entertaining guests during any occasion.

Camembert Cheese: What is It?

Camembert is another type of soft cheese made from cow’s milk, however unlike brie this variety has a more earthy flavor profile due to its higher fat content (around 45% versus 33% for brie). Like brie it also has an edible white rind which helps add complexity to its flavor profile; however camembert tends to be much gooier than brie when ripe making it ideal for spreading on toast or crackers for an easy snack or appetizer dish.

Celebrate National Moldy Cheese Day by exploring all that blue, Brie, and Camembert cheeses have to offer! Whether you’re looking for something mild like Brie or something more robust like Stilton blue cheese there’s sure to be something here that will tantalize your taste buds! So grab some crackers and get ready to indulge in some delicious moldy goodness! Happy National Moldy Cheese Day everyone!
