Happy National Rice Pudding Day, everyone! In honor of this most special of days, we’re taking a look at the history of this delicious dish and sharing some of our favorite flavors. So grab a spoon and let’s get started!
Rice pudding is a dish that can be traced back to ancient times. It’s thought that the first rice puddings were made in China, where rice has been cultivated for millennia. From China, the dish made its way to Persia and then to India. Indian rice pudding, or kheer, is particularly popular and can be found in many different regions throughout the subcontinent.
Rice pudding arrived in Europe in the Middle Ages, where it quickly became a popular treat among the nobility. Rice pudding was usually served as a dessert, but it could also be used as a way to use up leftover cooked rice. Either way, it was always a welcome sight on the dinner table.
The popularity of rice pudding continued into the modern era. In the United States, rice pudding became especially popular in the colonial era. New Englanders would often make their rice pudding with milk that had been thickened with cornstarch or flour. This version of rice pudding remains popular today and can be found in many different grocery stores.
Now that we know a little bit about the history of this dish, let’s take a look at some of our favorite flavors!
