September 20
National String Cheese Day happens on Friday September 20, 2024.
The first step in making your favorite snack is to make the actual cheese itself. This process starts with milk, which is heated up until it’s just right and then cooled down so that it begins to curdle. The curds are then separated from the whey and put into molds of various sizes, depending on what kind of cheese will be made. Finally, they’re pressed together until they become nice and compact.
This process has been practiced for centuries in Italy, but now it’s used all over the world to make delicious mozzarella string cheese. Once the cheese has been formed into blocks, it needs to be stretched before it can be shaped into strings. This stretching process helps give string cheese its unique texture and flavor. It also helps create those iconic “strings” that everyone loves so much! To achieve this effect, manufacturers stretch and fold the blocks of cheese repeatedly until they reach a desired consistency.
Now that our blocks of cheese have been stretched out properly, it’s time for them to be turned into strings! To do this, manufacturers cut strips off of the block of cheese and roll them up tightly into individual strings that are ready for packaging! And voila—mozzarella string cheese is ready for snacking!
