National Waffle Day is upon us! This holiday is a great excuse to enjoy one of America’s favorite breakfast foods. But what exactly are waffles? And what kinds of waffles are there? Let’s take a closer look.
Waffles are a type of leavened batter or dough cooked between two metal plates, usually in a waffle iron. Waffle irons have deep indentations that give waffles their signature grid pattern. This grid pattern helps the syrup or other toppings seep into all the nooks and crannies for maximum deliciousness!
There are two main types of waffles: Belgian and American. Belgian waffles are lighter, crispier, and have deeper indentations than American waffles. They are often served with whipped cream, fresh fruit, and powdered sugar. American waffles are thicker, chewier, and have shallower indentations. They are often served with butter and syrup.
