Everything You Need to Know About Northern Territory Picnic Day

Australia is a land of many holidays, and Picnic Day is one of them! This public holiday is celebrated in the Northern Territory every year on the first Monday of August. It’s a day to enjoy good food and company with family and friends, and what better way to do that than by going on a picnic?

But what exactly is a picnic? According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a picnic is “a social entertainment at which each person contributes some share of the food and drink.” In other words, it’s a potluck meal taken outdoors. Picnics are usually held in parks or other scenic outdoor locations, and they’re often themed around a particular activity such as hiking or fishing.

So now that we know what a picnic is, let’s take a look at some of the best places to have one in the Northern Territory!

  • Casuarina Coastal Reserve: This lovely reserve is located just north of Darwin, and it’s the perfect place for a seafood picnic. There’s plenty of room to set up your blanket and bask in the sun, and you can even go for a swim if it gets too hot. Just be sure to pack some insect repellent, as there can be quite a few mosquitoes around!
  • George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens: If you’re looking for a more relaxed vibe, then the Darwin Botanic Gardens might be more your speed. These tranquil gardens are full of beautiful plants and flowers, and they even have their own café if you don’t feel like packing a lunch.
  • Litchfield National Park: For something a little more adventurous, Litchfield National Park is definitely worth checking out. This park is home to waterfalls, rainforests, termite mounds, and swimming holes—just to name a few things!—so there’s definitely no shortage of things to see and do. And when you get hungry, there are plenty of picnic spots to choose from. Just be sure to bring along some insect repellent as well, as there are often mosquitoes in the area.
  • Fannie Bay Foreshore Reserve: Fannie Bay Foreshore Reserve is another great option for those who want to relax by the water. This reserve offers stunning views of Darwin Harbour, plus there’s plenty of grassy areas for picnickers to set up shop. And if you get peckish, there are several cafes nearby where you can grab something to eat.
  • Kakadu National Park: Kakadu National Park is one of Australia’s most iconic tourist destinations, so it’s definitely worth considering if you’re looking for somewhere special to have your picnic. This huge park is home to wetlands, rainforests, rivers, and so much more—you could easily spend days exploring all it has to offer! There are also several guided tours available if you want to learn more about Kakadu’s history and culture. Just be sure to pack plenty of food and water as there are no shops inside the park boundaries.

There are plenty of great places to have a picnic in the Northern Territory! Whether you’re looking for somewhere scenic or adventurous, there’s sure to be something that suits your taste. So round up your friends or family members, grab some food and drinks, and head outdoors for an unforgettable Picnic Day experience.
