But before you do, let’s take a quick minute to learn a little bit about these delicious treats. After all, knowledge is power!
The first known mention of the word “bagel” was in 1610, in Jewish community regulations from Krakow, Poland. The regulations stated that bagels should be given as a gift to women in childbirth. These early bagels were quite different from the ones we know today; they were made without malt and thus were not as sweet. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that malt was added to the dough, giving us the bagels we know and love today.
Bagels arrived in America in the late 19th century with Polish immigrants. At first, they were only popular in immigrant communities but eventually caught on with the general public. In the mid-20th century, mass production and distribution methods helped further increase the popularity of bagels across America. And now we have an entire day dedicated to celebrating these delicious treats!
