It’s that time of year again! Time to break out the frying pan and get cooking, because today is National Corn Fritter Day! But what are corn fritters, exactly? And how can you make sure you’re celebrating this highly important holiday the right way? Luckily, we’re here to help. Read on to learn everything you need to know about National Corn Fritter Day – and how to make the most of it.
Corn fritters are fried cakes made from a batter containing cornmeal, flour, eggs, and milk or cream. They can be either savory or sweet, and are often served as a side dish or appetizer. In the United States, they are commonly served with a honey butter or syrup. However, in other parts of the world corn fritters are often served as a main course with dipping sauces on the side.
Contrary to popular belief, there is not just one type of corn fritter. In fact, there are many different types of corn fritters depending on what region you’re in. For example, South African corn fritters are made with yellow mealies (corn on the cob) and often served with chakalaka (a type of vegetable relish). In New Zealand, meanwhile, corn fritters are made with canned corn and often served as part of a platter with meat and vegetables.
Meanwhile, in the southern United States corn fritters are often made with fresh sweetcorn kernels and served as a side dish. These types of corn fritters are sometimes called hushpuppies – and no matter what you call them, they’re delicious!
No matter what your favorite type of corn fritter is – or whether you prefer them sweet or savory – there’s no doubt that they’re delicious. So why not celebrate National Corn Fitter Day by whipping up a batch (or two) for yourself? Your taste buds will thank you.
