National Lamington Day – Australia happens on Sunday July 21, 2024.
Today is a very special day indeed! Here in Australia, we celebrate National Lamington Day. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this delicious treat, a Lamington is a sponge cake coated in chocolate sauce and then rolled in shredded coconut. It’s basically an edible piece of heaven, and I for one am thrilled that we have set aside a day to enjoy them!
As I mentioned before, a Lamington is a sponge cake coated in chocolate sauce and then rolled in shredded coconut. The origins of the Lamington are disputed, but most people believe that it was created in either Queensland or New South Wales in the early 1900s. The cake was named after Lord Lamington, who was the Governor of Queensland at the time.
There are actually quite a few different types of Lamingtons. The most popular varieties are plain, chocolate, and raspberry, but you can also find them with things like nuts or cream filling. Basically, if you can imagine it, there’s probably a Lamington out there that meets your needs!
So whether you’re celebrating National Lamington Day here in Australia or just enjoying a delicious treat, I hope you take the time to appreciate this humble cake for all that it is. And who knows? Maybe someday soon we’ll see National Lamington Day become a global holiday!
