August 6
National Root Beer Float Day happens on Tuesday August 6, 2024.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year…for root beer lovers, that is! Today is National Root Beer Float Day, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by indulging in this classic summertime treat. But before we get our float on, let’s take a quick tour through root beer float history. Ready for a frosty trip down memory lane? Let’s go!
The root beer float as we know it today dates back to 1893, when an enterprising soda jerk in Colorado combined two of his most popular products—root beer and ice cream—to create what was originally known as the Black Cow. The Black Cow quickly caught on, and before long, root beer floats were being enjoyed all across the country.
The root beer float enjoyed a period of popularity during Prohibition, when people were looking for alcohol-free ways to enjoy themselves. And during World War II, dairy products were rationed, making ice cream a rare treat. That meant that root beer floats became an even more popular way to enjoy a scoop or two of America’s favorite dessert.
If you had the privilege of visiting a local drug store in America during its golden era, between 1920 and 1950s, chances are you’ll have encountered someone special. A jolly fellow known as the Soda Jerk! His job was to craft delicious concoctions from flavored syrup combined with carbonated water or ice cream – all dispensed into tall glasses with soda spoons and straws. Nowadays these unique characters might be hard to come by but at least we still get those tasty treats they invented for us!
Today, there are all sorts of variations on the root beer float, from the Classic (root beer + vanilla ice cream) to the Black & Tan (root beer + chocolate ice cream). No matter how you like your root beer float, one thing is for sure: this tasty treat is here to stay!
National Root Beer Float Day is the perfect opportunity to indulge in this classic summertime treat. Whether you like your root beer float classic or with a twist, we hope you’ll raise a glass (or mug) and toast to all things foamy and delicious! Happy National Root Beer Float Day!
